The Cardinals took on the Farmingdale Green Dogs in the opening game of the Massapequa Coastal Little League Tournament. Hits and runs were at a premium, as pitching and defense dominated.
The Cardinals faced an excellent pitcher from the Green Dogs. Unfortunately for Farmingdale, they faced an even better one, as Andrew Purcell went the distance, tossing a 1 hit, 1 run complete game victory.
The Cardinals lone runs came in the 3rd inning. With 1 out, Nick Schoen singled and advanced to 2nd on a walk to Ryan Fama. Kyle Lamb then singled to load the bases. With 1 out and the bases loaded, the runners took some aggressive leads and took off on the Joe Oliveto's single up the middle. Schoen scored easily and Fama motored around 3rd and scored on a sweeping slide into home, avoiding the tag and giving the Cardinals a lead they would never relinquish.
There were many excellent defensive plays, including Fama in centerfield, Purcell on the mound, Lamb behind the plate and Salomone in left, who tracked down a long drive with two out and the tying run on 3rd to close out the game.
The Cardinals continue the MCLL Tournament on Wednesday, 8pm at Burns Park.
Congratulations to the Cardinals on their opening tournament win!
