6th Grade Cardinals drop to 4-2

On Friday (May 23rd), the Cardinals took on defending champion St Joseph from Garden City. We have said all along that pitching and defense win games. The pitching was there, as Anthony Wallitsch pitched 3 strong innings and Nick Schoen came on for the final 2 in relief, but the defense was not, as we gave up 5 unearned runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings on some errors and plays that could have but were not made, eventually losing 11-1.

Offensively, we also looked a bit lethargic, as the first 3 innings we took alot of pitches for strikes. After a brief "talk" after the third, the team started to gel and play "Cardinal Basball". The defense got sharper and the offense started to put the ball in play. The St Joe's defense was solid however, and turned away all potential rallies.

Despite the tough loss, there was still some nice defensive work by Mike Tancredi at short, Nich Schoen at first, Kyle Carroll in left and at 2nd base and Mike Osmundsen, who made a nice play going to his left at 3rd base, and then made a nice catch and throw from centerfield, almost getting the runner at home plate.

Offensively, our lone run scored on a single by Matt "the Cat" Schumacher, who then stole 2nd, 3rd and home. We also had two great at bats by Jack McGovern, who was robbed twice on rips down the 3rd baseline.

Folks, this happens in baseball. Sometimes, we just don't have our best game. We'll chalk this one up to a day off from school and anticipation of the long weekend.

NO PRACTICE this week, as the field is in use for games every night.

Our next game is Wed, 5/28 at 5:30, Giese Park against St Doms. This will be our chance to show St Doms we are a much better, and much improved team than the one who lost 11-0 in the first game of the year.

Enjoy the long weekend.

On behalf of the Carroll Family and St Ignatius CYO, our thanks to all the men and women who have dedicated their lives to keeping us safe and free.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to those serving our country today, as we honor all on Monday.

Fly your flag with pride!

6th Grade Cardinals Improve to 4-1

Despite the rain Friday night, Giese Park was in fine condition as the Cardinals took on St Patrick's. Thanks go out to our head groundskeeper Dave Wallitsch with help from his dad Henry, Kevin Purcell, Bob and Bobby Lembo, Brian Coyle and John McGovern for getting the field ready.

Andrew (Johann) Purcell got the start on the mound and threw 4 shutout innings. Matt "Matty T" Tsotras came on in the 5th and put up a couple of goose eggs for the two inning save, as the Cardinals improved to 4-1 with a 9-0 victory.

Some excellent defense again by the Cardinals as shortstop Kyle "Ice Man" Carroll and 3rd Baseman Mike "Ozzie" Osmundsen made some fine plays in the 2nd inning. With 1 out and runners on first and second in the 3rd, shortstop Carroll made another fine play to his right and threw the runner out at 3rd, with Sammy Hizaji recording the putout. In the 6th, Hiajazi moved out to leftfield and pulled in a booming shot into leftcenterfield for the first out of the inning. After a strikeout and a walk, the final out was recorded with Ozzie making a play to his left at short and firing to secondbaseman "Big Mac" McGovern covering.

The Cardinals got on the board early, with Dan "the Man" Lembo blasting a double into the leftfield corner and advancing to 3rd on the overthrow. Lembo later scored on a steal of home plate. In the 3rd, the Cardinals exploded for 8 runs. Hizaji led off with a single and quickly stole 2nd base. Bulldog Arnone reached on an infield single and advanced to 2nd on an overthrow, with Hijazi scoring on the play. Arnone scored on a double by Tsotras into centerfield and came around to score on a double by Carroll into rightfield. After a single by Lembo, Purcell reached on an HBP to load the bases. Carroll scored on a single by Anthony Wallitsch, and Lembo later scored on his 2nd steal of home plate. Purcell and Wallitsch then scored on a single by Ryan Fama, who then stole 2nd, 3rd and home for the final run of the game.

NO PRACTICE THIS WEEK.

Right now, our next scheduled game is Wed May 28th, but we are working on a make-up game with St Joe's from Garden City for next week (possibly Friday the 23rd).

Our game against St. Edwards on June 14th has been cancelled due to a parish event with St Ignatius, they will be using the field. So we will try to make that game up as well, hopefully next week.

I will keep you all posted.

Enjoy the weekend!

6th Grade Cardinals Sweep - Improve to 3-1

How about those Cardinals!

We have said all through our preseason practices, that good pitching and defense win games, and it was evident once again this past Saturday (May 10th).

In game 1, Anthony "Cy Young" Wallistch pitched 4 2/3 innings of shut out ball, striking out 9 , and Andrew "Mo" Purcell came on for the 3 pitch save in a 10-0 win over St Patrick's. Good defense by catcher Matt Arnone, throwing out a would be base stealer in the first and applying the tag on a play at the plate in the 4th.

Offensively, the entire Cardinal team put together some excellent at bats, with runs scoring on RBIs by leftfielder Chris Sarni (2 RBIs), Catcher Matt Arnone (2 RBIs), Third Baseman Sammy Hizaji, Right Fielder Mike "Ozzie" Osmundsen and shortstop Andrew Purcell. The other three runs scored on steals of home by Purcell, Wallitsch and Dan "the Man" Lembo. Centerfielder Matt Tsotras had two stolen bases and a run scored, as every Cardinal batter either scored a run or knocked one in.

In game two, the Cardinals got on the board early, with a lead-off single by Leftfielder Ryan Fama, who then stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on a groundout by Purcell. The Cardinals plated 2 more runs in the 3rd on on run scoring singles by Sammy Hijazi and Andrew Purcell. Two more Cardinals scored in the 5th. After a lead off walk and a stolen base by Matt Arnone, 2nd baseman Jack McGovern moved Arnone to 3rd with a well placed ground out to the right side. Catcher Chris Sarni reached on a HBP and promptly stole 2nd base. That Man Sammy came through again with an RBI ground out to score Arnone, with Sarni scoring on a steal of home plate.

Kyle "Knucksie" Carroll had the knuckleball working, as he worked the first 4 innings in scoreless fashion, with 4 strikeouts. Good defensive plays by Matt "Bull Dog" Arnone at 3rd, Jack "Big Mac" McGovern at 2nd base and Tyler Coyle in right.

In the 5th, some untimely errors led to 4 unearned runs, making the game a nail biter at 5-4, but Ryan Fama came on for a 1-2-3 6th inning to notch his 2nd save of the year.

This Week in Cardinal Baseball
  • Tuesday May 13: Practice at Giese Park from 5:00-6:30.
  • Saturday May 17: Game at Giese Park at 10am vs St Patrick's. Please be at the field by 9am.

On behalf of the Cardinals and the Carroll Family

Happy Mother's Day to all.

Season Opener/Home Opener

The 6th Grade St Ignatius Cardinals opened the 2008 season against perennially tough St Dominick's on Friday night up at the St Dominick's Baseball Complex. The chilling wind coming in off of Oyster Bay and some untimely fielding errors lead to a closer than it looks 11-0 loss.

Despite the loss, Kyle Carroll pitched well for 4 innings. After throwing a shut out in the 2nd and allowing a run in the 3rd, St Dom's scored 4 unearned ruins in the 4th and 3 unearned runs in the 5th.

Offensive highlights included a booming double by Anthony Wallitsch and good at bats by Matt Arnone, Jack McGovern and Dan Lembo, each of whom worked the count, fouling off pitches and eventually earning the walk.

What a difference a day makes.

The Cardinals played their home opener the next morning against St Edward's at newly renovated Giese park. They say good pitching and defense beat good hitting and the Cards came through with a hard fought 2-1 win over St Edward's.

Anthony Wallitsch got the nod for the home opener and gave up 1 run over 4 innings, with the one run coming on a walk to the first batter. After that, Anthony settled in with 6 strikeouts. Defensively, there were many standouts. In the second inning, right fielder Conor Menig made a sliding catch down the right field line to save a potential double. In the 3rd, with runners on 1st and 2nd and none out, Catcher Matt Schumacher threw down to first on strike three. 1st baseman Kyle Carroll took the throw and relayed to shortstop Andrew Purcell for an unconventional strike em out throw em out double play. In the 4th, with runners on 1st and 2nd and one out, Left fielder Ryan Fama grabbed a rising line drive in left and threw to 2nd baseman Dan Lembo who alertly covered 2nd for the inning ending double play. Fama came on in relief in the 5th and threw a 1-2-3 inning. In the 6th with men on 1st and 3rd, one out and the game on the line, Fama grabbed a comeback line drive and threw to Mike Tancredi covering third, for the inning ending double play.

The Cardinals got on the board in the first inning, when Kyle Carroll singled to center. Carroll then stole 2nd and 3rd and raced home on the overthrow to third to tie the game at one. The Cardinals threatened again in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings, but could not plate a run.

In the bottom of the 6th, Carroll led off the inning with a walk and promptly stole 2nd base. He went to third on a single by Andrew Purcell, and with one out, Ryan Fama came through with the game winning single to right.

Our next game is scheduled for Friday, 6pm at Giese Park against St Joe's from Garden City. Please be at the field by 5:00pm.

That will be followed by a double header on Saturday, starting at 10:00am, at Giese Park. Please be at the field by 9am.

Enjoy your week.
