Opening Day finally arrived on April 28th, but before the first pitch, we received the disappointing news that starting catcher Mike Tarone would start the season on the DL, having suffered a break in his hand. We all wish Mike a speedy recovery!
Despite the rain the previous day, Giese Park was in excellent shape and the game started on time. Chris Morgan threw the first pitch of the season and provided 3 strong innings, giving up only two runs. John DiSanto followed with another three strong innings, giving up one run on a controversial call, and Suhail Zalia closed out the game.
Unfortunately, the OLM pitching was tough this day, as the St Ignatius team could only plate 1 run. A good offensive performance by first baseman James Carroll (1 hit), shortstop Elijah Rustin (2-4, 4 stolen bases and a run scored) and John DiSanto, who contributed a booming double to dead centerfield.
The Coach Carroll "Player of The Game" goes to Christian Funfgeld, who made his catching debut (a baptism by fire), putting in seven tough innings behind the plate and improving with each passing inning. We expect some great defence form Christian this year!
As a reminder, the game scheduled for Sunday April 29th has been cancelled (we earned a forfeit win).
Next game...
5/5 Saturday, 12:00pm vs. St. Patrick @ Eisenhower Park C (players should be at the park by 11:15am)
Eisenhower Park, just south of the Aquatic Center, which can be accessed thru the South Parking lot for the Aquatic Center, (not the main Aquatic Center Parking Lot), right off of Merrick Avenue. Saftey Town should be just north of the lot you will park in.
Next Practice
Tuesday, May 1 at 5;00pm at Giese Park.
Remember, when they start the game, they don't yell, "Work ball." They say, "Play ball."

Practice - 4/21/07
Nice practice on Saturday morning as we had our first "beautiful" spring morning. The boys worked on situational fielding and base running.
Next practice is set for Tuesday April 24th, 5pm at Giese. This is important as we prepare for our first game on Saturday April 28th, 9am at Giese Park against Our Lady of Mercy - 2 (Jim Loeffler's team).
I hope to have the uniforms by Tuesday.

Practice - 4/14/07
A bit of a disappointing turnout, as 5 players did not show for practice. With opening day only 2 weeks away, we will need a better showing in order to be ready. Unexcused absences from practice may reduce playing time.
For those who were there, we had a very good 3 hour session of live BP and fielding.
Next practice is Wednesday 4/18, 5pm at Giese Park. We will likely scrimmage the U14 team again.

Spring Training #4
Good practice last night at Giese, has we held a joint scrimmage with the South Shore Indians as well as Coach Fiore's U14 team. The scrimmage gave the boys an opportunity to see some live pitching, and gave Coach Russo and I a chance to see some of our pitchers in a live situation. We were very impressed.
There were 4 unexcused absences. As coaches, we expect all players to attend all practices and games, unless we are previously notified.
Our next practice is scheduled for Saturday April 14th, 9am at Giese park and should run until about 11:30.
Try to stay dry!

Spring Training - OUTDOORS!
We had our third practice and first one outdoors. Despite the cold, most of the players were in attendance (the others were away for the Easter break).
Working outdoors gave us a chance to work against live pitching as well as some infield/outfield drills. The 2 hour practice went about 2:45.
Next practice is Wednesday April 11th, 5pm at Giese Park. We will also plan a 9am practice for Saturday the 14th, also at Giese.
Our first game is set for Tuesday April 24th, 6:00pm at Giese Park against St Thomas (you can check www.cyons.org for the rest of the schedule, as well as the St Ignatius calendar through April).
Make sure to stretch every day and work your core strength (mid chest to mid thighs).
Happy Easter

Spring Training 2007
Welcome back to the 2007 Season!
We have now had two indoor practices and the boys have really started shaking off the rust. Returning veterans James Carroll, Mike Tarone and Christian Funfgeld form the nucleus of what should be a very competitive team this year. Pitchers Joe Morrisey and John DiSanto will form the front end of an experienced rotation and the much improved hitting of Marc Shepard, Justin Lambott and Kevin White will strengthen our offense.
The additions of hitting coach Ed Russo and fielding coach Steve Carroll have already paid dividends as they helped the boys shake off some bad off season habits and improved on their mechanics.
Next practice is scheduled for Saturday April 7th at 10am - Giese Park. Our first game is scheduled for Tuesday April 24th, 6pm at Giese Park against St. Thomas.
On behalf of St Ignatius CYO, I'd like to wish you all a very Happy and Blessed Easter.
