The Cardinals improved to 3-5 with a hard fought win over OLM - 1 last night (5/29). Excellent pitching from Mike Lapinski and Christian Funfgeld, who made his 2007 debut.

The boys jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and cruised to an 11-10 victory. Leading the way were Elijah Rustin, who was 2 for 2 with a walk, 3 runs scored and 4 stolen bases, James Carroll, who was 1-2 with a walk, and 2 runs scored, Chris Morgan, who was 3-3 with 2 RBIs and 3 stolen bases and Marc Shepard, who went 2-2 with 2 RBIs.

The Coach Carroll Player of the Game was James Carroll, who made his 2007 catching debut and immediately took control of the game. In the top of the 4th inning, an OLM Runner brutally crashed into James, causing serious injury and necessitating his removal from the field. James held on to the ball to complete the double play. James also maintained his position in the batting order so as to avoid an automatic out and in the bottom of the 4th, he laid down a perfect safety squeeze bunt, beat the throw to first and scored what proved to be the winning run on a sac fly by Mike Lapinksi.

Unfortunately, we have now lost James for the season, has he suffered a mild concussion, buckle fracture to his right arm and bone chip to the growth plate on his right thumb.

Next game is Tuesday June 5th at Giese Park against St. Edwards. Please be there by 5:15pm.

On Saturday May 25th the boys played OLM -2. Joe Morrisey pitched well with most of the runs scored being unearned. John DiSanto played well behind the plate in his catching debut and Marc Shepard kept the game going late with a rope single into right centerfield and 2 stolen bases. Unfortunately, we were no match has OLM handed us the loss.

The Coach Carroll Player of the Game was John DiSanto, who played very well behind the dish and continued with his hot hitting.

Kindergarden, 1st and 2nd Grade

Our three K-2 teams started their season last night after two weeks of practice. Our thanks to Gayle Mandaro-Silverman and coaches Rick Hoffman & Clint Adam (Green Team), William Vasquez (Blue Team) and Bart Coppola & Steve Sullivan (Red Team) for their time, efforts and patience in coordinating the league.

The teams play Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 6:00pm on the 60' field at Giese Park (games) and Lee Ave (practice). The schedule is now posted on the website.

I know the kids would love to have you come down and cheer them on. There is nothing better than watching our kids play baseball for the shear joy of the game. We hope to build our program around these young athletes and bring a travel team championship home to St Ignatius in the coming years.

Hope to see you at the fields.

Game 5 - May 12

Despite a tough 6-5 loss to Cure of Ars, the Cardinals (yes, that is our official team name) mounted a comeback in the bottom of the 7th capped by a 2 run, 2 out double by John DiSanto to score James Carroll and Elijah Rustin and put the tying run on 2nd. A nice play by their first baseman prevented a run tying single by Chris Morgan. Good defense and good pitching all around.

Coach Carroll Player of the Day goes to James Carroll, who continued his hot hitting with a 2-3 performance (plus a walk) and made his debut on the mound. James is now hitting a lofty .600.

Next practice - MANDATORY

Games 3 & 4 (May 5th & 6th)

Despite two losses over the weekend, the boys had lots of positives to take from the games.

In Saturday's 5-1 loss to St. Patrick's, the boys found themselves with runners on 1st and 3rd, no one out in the bottom of the first inning. With the runner moving on the pitch, the batter hit a scorching line drive down the 3rd base line. Justin Lambott snared the line drive for out #1, threw to first baseman James Carroll to catch the runner for out #2 and James threw a perfect strike to catcher Christian Funfgeld who blocked the plate and applied the tag for out #3 - a TRIPLE PLAY!

Good pitching again by Chris Morgan, Suhail Zalia and Christian Funfgeld, making his 2007 debut.

The Coach Carroll "Player of the Game" goes to Justin, James and Christian for turning the triple play.

In Sunday's 17-1 loss to St Dom's, the boys were down quick, giving up 7 in the 1st and 8 in the 2nd. Elijah Rustin came on in the 3rd, making his 2007 pitching debut and was lights out for 2 innings striking out 7 batters (2 reached on a dropped 3rd strike). Good offensive performances from Elijah (who stole home), Joe Morrisey (2-2 with a double) and James Carroll (2-2 and hitting .571 on the year).

The Coach Carroll "Player of the Game" goes to Elijah Rustin, who pitched beautifully for 2 innings and scored the game's only run.

Next Practice:
Tuesday May 8th, 5:30 at Giese Park.

Next Game:
Saturday May 12, 11:30 at Eisenhower Field "C" (same as last week).

Enjoy the week, stretch out and stay loose!
