NJBL Game 7 (9/27/08)

NJBL Game 8 (9/27/08)
After a scoreless top of the 1st, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead. The Cardinals countered with a run in the top of the 2nd, as Wallitsch led off with a single. After a walk to Salamone, Fama singled for the first Cardinal run.

The Eagles came right back with two of their own in the bottom half of the 2nd to take a 5-1 lead, but the Cardinals bounced right back with 3 in the top of the third. Joe Oliveto led off with a single, followed by singles by Kyle Lamb and Chris Sarni. 3 consecutive walks to Wallitsch, Salamone and Fama helped close the gap to 5-4.

The Eagles came right back with 1 in the bottom fo the 3rd, but again, the Cardinals responded with 4 in the 4th. Michael Chicarella led off with a single. Joe Oliveto then dropped down a sacrifice bunt, with Chicarella running on the play and moving to 3rd. Kyle Lamb then singled him home, followed by a walk to Chris Sarni. The MCLL Tournament continues Sunday 9/28, and the NJBL season resumes on Sunday 10/05/08.

No practice this week, as darkness comes quickly, and many of the boys are involved with after school commitments.

Cardinals Lose Tough One in MCLL Tournament

The Cardinals dropped game two of the MCLL Tournament, 4-2 vs. the ToBay Gators.

The Cardinals got terrific pitching from Danny Taggart for 4 2/3 innings and Anthony Wallitsch for 1 1/3, but the Cardinals found themselves up against an excellent pitcher for the Gators.

Through the first 5 innings, the Cardinals could only manage 2 baserunners, a second inning walk to Andrew Purcell and a 3rd inning single by Anthony Wallitsch.

Despite facing a 4-0 deficit heading into the bottom of the 6th, the Cardinals never quite.

Anthony Salamone led off the inning with a single to right center. Salamone then stole 2nd and 3rd and took home on a past ball strike three to Nick Schoen. Schoen took off for first on the past ball and easily made it safe. Schoen then stole second and moved to third on a ground out by Kyle Lamb. After a walk to Wallitsch, Joe Oliveto hit a hard grounder up the middle that the pitcher snared. In his haste to turn two, the ball sailed into centerfield, with Schoen scoring, Wallitsch moving to 3rd and Oliveto to 2nd. Unfortunately, the Gator pitcher settled in and closed out the game.

There were some nice defensive plays, with Ryan Fama playing well in centerfield and Chris Sarni playing well behind the plate, picking off one runner at first and cutting down a potential steal at third.

We next play Friday, Burns Park at 8:15 vs. the LI Braves. Please be at the field by 7pm.

Cardinals Take Opening Game of MCLL Tournament

The Cardinals took on the Farmingdale Green Dogs in the opening game of the Massapequa Coastal Little League Tournament. Hits and runs were at a premium, as pitching and defense dominated.

The Cardinals faced an excellent pitcher from the Green Dogs. Unfortunately for Farmingdale, they faced an even better one, as Andrew Purcell went the distance, tossing a 1 hit, 1 run complete game victory.

The Cardinals lone runs came in the 3rd inning. With 1 out, Nick Schoen singled and advanced to 2nd on a walk to Ryan Fama. Kyle Lamb then singled to load the bases. With 1 out and the bases loaded, the runners took some aggressive leads and took off on the Joe Oliveto's single up the middle. Schoen scored easily and Fama motored around 3rd and scored on a sweeping slide into home, avoiding the tag and giving the Cardinals a lead they would never relinquish.

There were many excellent defensive plays, including Fama in centerfield, Purcell on the mound, Lamb behind the plate and Salomone in left, who tracked down a long drive with two out and the tying run on 3rd to close out the game.

The Cardinals continue the MCLL Tournament on Wednesday, 8pm at Burns Park.

Congratulations to the Cardinals on their opening tournament win!

Reilly laid down a sacrifice bunted towards the first base line and Cashman kept going, sliding in ahead of the throw at 3rd base and scoring on the overthrow. The run proved important, as Syosset came back with 3 in the top of the 6th, but wound up a run shy as the Cardinals took game two with a 10-9 win, improving to 3-1.

Game 5 (9/20/08) vs. Bethpage Eagles
The Bethpage Eagles started the scoring with 2 runs in the top of the first, but the Cardinals came roaring back.

Cardinals Take 2 in Fall Opener

The 12U Cardinals opened up the 2008 NJBL Fall season with a doubleheader sweep of the Roslyn Rockets up at East Hill Community Park.

Game 1
Anthony Wallitsch got the opening day start for the Cardinals and was quickly staked to a 2-0 lead. Chris Sarni led off the game with a single and quickly stole 2nd and 3rd. After Mike Chicarella reached first on a dropped 3rd strike, Sarni then stole home. Chicarella also stole 2nd on the play, followed by a steal of 3rd and finally a steal of home.

The Rockets scored a run in their half of the first, but the Cardinals came right back with 4 in the top of the second, with Ryan Fama, Matt Tsotras, Danny Taggart and Kyle Carroll all scoring runs and Carroll and Joe Oliveto picking up the RBIs.

The Rockets came back with 3 in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd to tie the game. Despite pitching well, Wallitsch's pitch count was high, so Nick Schoen relieved in the middle of the third and pitched 3 1/3 innings of shut out ball.

The score remained tied until the 5th, when the Cardinals broke through for two more runs. With 2 out, Kyle Lamb worked a walk and went to 3rd on Kyle Cashman's single. Cashman then stole second and Chicarella plated them both with a single to right centerfield.

The Cardinals plated two more runs in the 6th. With 1 out, Andrew Purcell singled. Schoen followed with a single of his own, moving Purcell to third. After Schoen stole 2nd, Fama reached on a drop 3rd strike. Danny Taggart then singled in Cashman and Purcell to close out the scoring and secure the 10-6 victory.

Game 2
Andrew Purcell got the nod in game two and pitched a scoreless first inning. In the bottom of the first, the Cardinals again jumped out to a 2-0 lead. Joe Oliveto started the inning off with a single and moved to second on a walk to Kyle Cashman. Andrew Purcell then doubled them both home.

The Rockets came back with a run of their own in the 2nd, but that was all they would get, as Purcell continued on and pitched a beautiful 3-hit, 1 run complete game.

The Cardinals cored two more runs in the 3rd, as Matt Tsotras led off the inning with a walk, followed by a single by Kyle Lamb. With 1 out and runners at second and third, Joe Oliveto stroked a single into right center to plate both runners.

The Cardinals came back with 5 more runs in the 4th. With 1 out, Anthony Salamone singled, followed by walks to Taggart and Wallitsch to load the bases. Chris Sarni then singled home two runs, with Wallitsch moving to 3rd. Sarni then stole second. After a walk to Tsotras, Lamb singled home two more runs. Tsotras then stole home to close out the scoring and give the Cardinals a 9-1 victory.

Defensively, there were some outstanding plays by Salamone at 3rd, Fama in center, Wallitsch at first and Tsotras in right.

Our next game is Sept 14, 1:30 at Stillwell vs the Syosset Braves.

See you on the fields
