The Cardinals dropped game two of the MCLL Tournament, 4-2 vs. the ToBay Gators.
The Cardinals got terrific pitching from Danny Taggart for 4 2/3 innings and Anthony Wallitsch for 1 1/3, but the Cardinals found themselves up against an excellent pitcher for the Gators.
Through the first 5 innings, the Cardinals could only manage 2 baserunners, a second inning walk to Andrew Purcell and a 3rd inning single by Anthony Wallitsch.
Despite facing a 4-0 deficit heading into the bottom of the 6th, the Cardinals never quite.
Anthony Salamone led off the inning with a single to right center. Salamone then stole 2nd and 3rd and took home on a past ball strike three to Nick Schoen. Schoen took off for first on the past ball and easily made it safe. Schoen then stole second and moved to third on a ground out by Kyle Lamb. After a walk to Wallitsch, Joe Oliveto hit a hard grounder up the middle that the pitcher snared. In his haste to turn two, the ball sailed into centerfield, with Schoen scoring, Wallitsch moving to 3rd and Oliveto to 2nd. Unfortunately, the Gator pitcher settled in and closed out the game.
There were some nice defensive plays, with Ryan Fama playing well in centerfield and Chris Sarni playing well behind the plate, picking off one runner at first and cutting down a potential steal at third.
We next play Friday, Burns Park at 8:15 vs. the LI Braves. Please be at the field by 7pm.
