Opening Day finally arrived on April 28th, but before the first pitch, we received the disappointing news that starting catcher Mike Tarone would start the season on the DL, having suffered a break in his hand. We all wish Mike a speedy recovery!
Despite the rain the previous day, Giese Park was in excellent shape and the game started on time. Chris Morgan threw the first pitch of the season and provided 3 strong innings, giving up only two runs. John DiSanto followed with another three strong innings, giving up one run on a controversial call, and Suhail Zalia closed out the game.
Unfortunately, the OLM pitching was tough this day, as the St Ignatius team could only plate 1 run. A good offensive performance by first baseman James Carroll (1 hit), shortstop Elijah Rustin (2-4, 4 stolen bases and a run scored) and John DiSanto, who contributed a booming double to dead centerfield.
The Coach Carroll "Player of The Game" goes to Christian Funfgeld, who made his catching debut (a baptism by fire), putting in seven tough innings behind the plate and improving with each passing inning. We expect some great defence form Christian this year!
As a reminder, the game scheduled for Sunday April 29th has been cancelled (we earned a forfeit win).
Next game...
5/5 Saturday, 12:00pm vs. St. Patrick @ Eisenhower Park C (players should be at the park by 11:15am)
Eisenhower Park, just south of the Aquatic Center, which can be accessed thru the South Parking lot for the Aquatic Center, (not the main Aquatic Center Parking Lot), right off of Merrick Avenue. Saftey Town should be just north of the lot you will park in.
Next Practice
Tuesday, May 1 at 5;00pm at Giese Park.
Remember, when they start the game, they don't yell, "Work ball." They say, "Play ball."
