Despite the rain Friday night, Giese Park was in fine condition as the Cardinals took on St Patrick's. Thanks go out to our head groundskeeper Dave Wallitsch with help from his dad Henry, Kevin Purcell, Bob and Bobby Lembo, Brian Coyle and John McGovern for getting the field ready.
Andrew (Johann) Purcell got the start on the mound and threw 4 shutout innings. Matt "Matty T" Tsotras came on in the 5th and put up a couple of goose eggs for the two inning save, as the Cardinals improved to 4-1 with a 9-0 victory.
Some excellent defense again by the Cardinals as shortstop Kyle "Ice Man" Carroll and 3rd Baseman Mike "Ozzie" Osmundsen made some fine plays in the 2nd inning. With 1 out and runners on first and second in the 3rd, shortstop Carroll made another fine play to his right and threw the runner out at 3rd, with Sammy Hizaji recording the putout. In the 6th, Hiajazi moved out to leftfield and pulled in a booming shot into leftcenterfield for the first out of the inning. After a strikeout and a walk, the final out was recorded with Ozzie making a play to his left at short and firing to secondbaseman "Big Mac" McGovern covering.
The Cardinals got on the board early, with Dan "the Man" Lembo blasting a double into the leftfield corner and advancing to 3rd on the overthrow. Lembo later scored on a steal of home plate. In the 3rd, the Cardinals exploded for 8 runs. Hizaji led off with a single and quickly stole 2nd base. Bulldog Arnone reached on an infield single and advanced to 2nd on an overthrow, with Hijazi scoring on the play. Arnone scored on a double by Tsotras into centerfield and came around to score on a double by Carroll into rightfield. After a single by Lembo, Purcell reached on an HBP to load the bases. Carroll scored on a single by Anthony Wallitsch, and Lembo later scored on his 2nd steal of home plate. Purcell and Wallitsch then scored on a single by Ryan Fama, who then stole 2nd, 3rd and home for the final run of the game.
NO PRACTICE THIS WEEK.
Right now, our next scheduled game is Wed May 28th, but we are working on a make-up game with St Joe's from Garden City for next week (possibly Friday the 23rd).
Our game against St. Edwards on June 14th has been cancelled due to a parish event with St Ignatius, they will be using the field. So we will try to make that game up as well, hopefully next week.
I will keep you all posted.
Enjoy the weekend!
