On Friday (May 23rd), the Cardinals took on defending champion St Joseph from Garden City. We have said all along that pitching and defense win games. The pitching was there, as Anthony Wallitsch pitched 3 strong innings and Nick Schoen came on for the final 2 in relief, but the defense was not, as we gave up 5 unearned runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings on some errors and plays that could have but were not made, eventually losing 11-1.
Offensively, we also looked a bit lethargic, as the first 3 innings we took alot of pitches for strikes. After a brief "talk" after the third, the team started to gel and play "Cardinal Basball". The defense got sharper and the offense started to put the ball in play. The St Joe's defense was solid however, and turned away all potential rallies.
Despite the tough loss, there was still some nice defensive work by Mike Tancredi at short, Nich Schoen at first, Kyle Carroll in left and at 2nd base and Mike Osmundsen, who made a nice play going to his left at 3rd base, and then made a nice catch and throw from centerfield, almost getting the runner at home plate.
Offensively, our lone run scored on a single by Matt "the Cat" Schumacher, who then stole 2nd, 3rd and home. We also had two great at bats by Jack McGovern, who was robbed twice on rips down the 3rd baseline.
Folks, this happens in baseball. Sometimes, we just don't have our best game. We'll chalk this one up to a day off from school and anticipation of the long weekend.
NO PRACTICE this week, as the field is in use for games every night.
Our next game is Wed, 5/28 at 5:30, Giese Park against St Doms. This will be our chance to show St Doms we are a much better, and much improved team than the one who lost 11-0 in the first game of the year.
Enjoy the long weekend.
On behalf of the Carroll Family and St Ignatius CYO, our thanks to all the men and women who have dedicated their lives to keeping us safe and free.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to those serving our country today, as we honor all on Monday.
Fly your flag with pride!
